Mullin Denounces Leader Schumer’s Political Play

Today, U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) released the following statement reaffirming his support for nationwide access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and denouncing Senate Democrats’ fear-mongering vote just weeks ahead of a presidential election.

“Senate Republicans stand united in our support for nationwide access to IVF treatments,” said Sen. Mullin. “My wife Christie and I struggled for years to start a family, so this is personal. Thankfully, IVF is widely available in all 50 states. Chuck Schumer’s show vote today was nothing but a sorry political attempt to rattle the American people weeks ahead of an election, and we won’t stand for it. Supporting couples who are using IVF or other fertility treatments is not – and should not be – controversial. Republicans have always been the party of life, and Christie and I believe every child is a blessing from the Lord.”

Background:

  • Mullin, and all Senate Republicans, joined U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Ted Cruz’s statement expressing support for continued nationwide access to IVF.
  • Senator Mullin also joined Senator Rick Scott’s resolution expressing support for starting and growing a family through IVF.
  • In June, Senate Democrats blocked Senator Ted Cruz’s request for unanimous consent to pass S. 4369, the IVF Protection Act
  • In a HELP Committee hearing, Senator Mullin shared his family’s personal experience with struggling to have children.
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1,000,000 children were born in the United States between 1987 and 2015 using assisted reproductive technologies, including IVF. In 2021, more than 97,000 children were born using IVF and other fertility services.
